Your Connection to Allah

The Fiqh Basics

What's Permitted & What's Restricted

Understanding the rulings gives you freedom — most worship remains open to you during hayd.

✓ Fully Permitted

  • Dhikr (all forms of remembrance of Allah)
  • Du'a (supplication in any form)
  • Listening to and reflecting on Quran
  • Seeking Islamic knowledge
  • Giving sadaqah (charity)
  • Sending salawat on the Prophet ﷺ
  • Istighfar (seeking forgiveness)
  • Attending Islamic lectures & classes
  • Doing good deeds & helping others
  • Making du'a at Fajr & Asr times
  • Reciting Quran from memory (majority view)
  • Reading tafsir, hadith, Islamic books

✗ Temporarily Excused

  • Salah (ritual prayer) — excused, not sinful and does not need to be made up
  • Sawm (fasting) — excused; Ramadan fasts must be made up
  • Touching the physical Mushaf directly (majority view)
  • Tawaf (circumambulation of the Ka'bah)
  • Entering the masjid — restricted (scholarly difference of opinion)
Important: The restrictions during hayd are a relief and mercy from Allah, not a punishment. The Prophet ﷺ said that a menstruating woman who refrains from salah with the sincere intention of submitting to Allah's command is herself performing an act of worship. You earn reward simply by complying.

Dhikr Most Recommended

The remembrance of Allah is unrestricted at any time. Tasbih, tahleel, takbeer, and all forms of dhikr are open to you throughout your period.

The Daleel

"O you who believe, remember Allah with much remembrance."

Quran 33:41

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best of deeds is that you die while your tongue is moist with the remembrance of Allah." (Ibn Hibban) There is no condition of ritual purity for dhikr.

Du'a — Supplication Always Open

Du'a is the essence of worship. There is no condition of purity for du'a — you can call upon Allah freely at any moment, in any language.

"And your Lord said: Call upon Me, I will respond to you." (Quran 40:60)

Du'a is the one ibadah that transcends all states and conditions. The Prophet ﷺ called it "the brain of worship" (Tirmidhi).

Best Times for Du'a During Your Period

Time of Fajr (before sunrise) The last third of the night — Allah descends and asks "Who calls upon Me?" (Bukhari)
Between adhan and iqamah Du'a during this time is not rejected (Tirmidhi) — listen to adhan and make dua
Friday (especially between Asr and Maghrib) A special hour on Friday when du'a is answered (Bukhari)
When rain falls Du'a is not rejected at the time of rainfall (Abu Dawud)
📖
Quran — Listening & Reflection

Listening to the Quran, reflecting on its meanings, and studying tafsir are all permissible. The restriction is on touching the physical mushaf — not on engaging with the Quran itself.

What You Can Do With the Quran on Your Period

  • ✅ Listen to recitation (apps, speakers, online) Fully permitted — no scholarly difference of opinion
  • ✅ Read Quran on a phone/tablet screen Majority view: a phone is not a mushaf, so this is permitted
  • ✅ Read Quran from memory without touching mushaf Permitted according to many scholars, especially for teaching/learning purposes
  • ✅ Study tafsir (Quran explanation) Fully permitted — reading about the Quran is encouraged
  • ⚠️ Touching physical mushaf directly Restricted per majority view. Can use gloves, a cloth, or a book stand

Note: There is a scholarly minority view (including some Maliki and Hanbali positions) that reciting Quran during menstruation is fully permissible with the intention of recitation, not prayer. Consult your local scholar if needed.

🌙
Salawat on the Prophet ﷺ

Sending blessings on the Prophet ﷺ is one of the most beloved and rewarded acts to Allah. It is unrestricted during menstruation.

"Indeed Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet. O you who believe, send blessings on him and salute him with worthy salutation." (Quran 33:56)

The Reward

For each salawat you send on the Prophet ﷺ, Allah sends ten blessings upon you, ten of your sins are erased, and you are raised ten degrees. (Muslim)

Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad
SallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam

Istighfar — Seeking Forgiveness

Seeking forgiveness is one of the most loved acts by Allah. The Prophet ﷺ himself made istighfar over 70 times daily despite being sinless.

"Whoever does evil or wrongs himself but then seeks Allah's forgiveness will find Allah most forgiving, most merciful." (Quran 4:110)

Astaghfirullah Simple, powerful, no conditions on purity
Rabbi-ghfir li wa tub 'alayya innaka Anta-t-Tawwabur-Rahim The Prophet ﷺ used to say this 100 times in a sitting (Tirmidhi)
Sayyidul Istighfar (the master supplication for forgiveness) Whoever says this with certainty and dies that day enters Jannah (Bukhari)
🌟
Tafakkur — Reflection & Contemplation

An hour of sincere reflection on the creation of Allah and His signs is considered greater than a year of optional worship in some scholarly statements.

"In the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of night and day there are signs for people of understanding." (Quran 3:190)

What to Reflect On

Plan & Prepare for Future Worship

Use this time to plan what you will do after your period — new goals, surahs to memorize, fasts to make up, daily routines to build.

The scholar Ibn al-Qayyim said that one of the signs of a person's love for Allah is that they plan and prepare for worship the way a traveler plans a journey.

  • 📅 Plan which Ramadan fasts to make up and when
  • 📖 Choose the next surah to memorize
  • 🌙 Set a Tahajjud goal for the coming month
  • 📊 Write your daily worship tracker/goals
  • 🤲 Write a personal dua list — what do you want to ask Allah for?

Period During Ramadan — Your Complete Guide

Having your period during Ramadan can feel like a spiritual loss — but it doesn't have to be. Many of the greatest rewards of Ramadan are available to you without fasting or praying salah. Here's how to make the most of it.

Remember: You are excused from fasting and the rewards you miss are not lost — Allah is Al-'Adl (The Just). The Prophet ﷺ said: "If a person is sick or travelling and cannot do what they used to do, Allah writes for them the same reward as when they were healthy and resident." (Bukhari)

01

Increase Your Dhikr Dramatically

Set a daily target — 1,000 SubhanAllah, 1,000 Alhamdulillah. Use a physical tasbih or a counter app. The reward is immense.

02

Attend Taraweeh Gatherings

You can attend the masjid (according to some scholars) or listen to taraweeh at home. Reflect deeply on the Quran being recited.

03

Go All Out With Du'a

Make a list of 20–30 things you want from Allah and dedicate 20–30 mins daily to sincere dua, especially in the last third of the night.

04

Laylatul Qadr — Don't Miss It

If your period falls on the last 10 nights, stay up in the last third making dua, dhikr, and istighfar. The night is better than 1,000 months — and dua is available to you fully.

05

Give Sadaqah Daily

Even $1/day in Ramadan carries massive rewards. Online platforms make it easy to give every single day of your period.

06

Serve & Feed Others

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever gives iftar to a fasting person will have the same reward as the person fasting." Prepare or contribute to iftar meals.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions Muslim women have about ibadah during their period.

The majority of contemporary scholars permit reading the Quran on a phone or tablet screen during menstruation, because a phone is not a mushaf (physical copy of the Quran) — it's a device that can display many things. You can freely read, listen, and engage with the Quran through digital means.
No. This is an important point — missed prayers during hayd (menstruation) or nifas (postpartum bleeding) do not need to be made up. This is agreed upon by all four madhabs. It is a mercy from Allah ﷻ, not something to feel guilty about. Only missed Ramadan fasts must be made up after your period ends.
There is a scholarly difference of opinion on this. The majority Hanafi, Shafi'i, and Hanbali view restricts women from staying in the mosque during menstruation, though passing through is generally permitted. Some Maliki scholars and contemporary scholars permit entering the masjid briefly, such as to attend a lecture. You can listen to taraweeh and lectures from the outer areas or women's sections in many masajid. Check with your local scholar for the ruling followed in your community.
This is one of the most common feelings Muslim women experience, and it's completely understandable. The key is to reframe your mindset: Allah ﷻ has given you this rest intentionally. Every second you spend in istighfar, dhikr, or dua is worship. Try to replace your prayer times with 10 minutes of focused dhikr and dua at those same times — this helps maintain your spiritual rhythm. Many women find that journaling their du'a list and reading Islamic content during this time actually deepens their connection with Allah rather than breaking it.
Yes, absolutely. Saying Bismillah, Alhamdulillah, and any other general du'a or dhikr is fully permissible during menstruation. These are everyday remembrances of Allah and carry no conditions of ritual purity whatsoever.
You can still receive the blessings of Laylatul Qadr through dua, dhikr, istighfar, and learning. Aisha (رضي الله عنها) asked the Prophet ﷺ: "What if I know which night is Laylatul Qadr — what should I say?" He gave her the famous du'a: "Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul 'afwa fa'fu 'anni" — O Allah, You are the Pardoner, You love to pardon, so pardon me. Keep repeating this especially on the odd nights of the last 10 nights of Ramadan.
Absolutely not. The Prophet ﷺ said explicitly: "You are not impure — menstruation is something Allah has decreed for the daughters of Adam." (Bukhari 298) The Arabic word for the state during menstruation (janaba) relates to ritual impurity only — a state requiring certain acts of purification before specific worship acts. It has nothing to do with a woman's worth, purity as a person, or her standing before Allah. A menstruating woman is beloved by Allah and her worship is fully received.
Yes — there is no scholarly dispute on this. Listening to and reflecting on the recitation of the Quran is fully permitted for a menstruating woman. Scholars encourage women to use this time to deeply listen to the Quran with the intention of understanding and reflecting on its meanings.
